The terms you need to know

Tourist tax

Italian municipalities levy a tourist tax per person per night, usually paid at the hotel. It is separate from the room rate and varies by city and hotel category, so it should appear as its own line in your budget.

How to negotiate

• Offer flexible dates or a shoulder-season window
• Bundle meeting rooms, meals or events with rooms
• Trade a firmer commitment for a lower attrition penalty
• Ask for a longer cut-off; 30–60 days is common
• Ask for the rate and the terms in writing, together

When to consider villas or apartments

For weddings and retreats, villas can house a core group together and add character. Check capacity, bathrooms, road access and local safety documentation, and remember shuttles when guests are spread across several places.
